Surviving the hard times at home

Use this guide as you see fit, it should not replace any medication you think you need or any such diet/s.

Milk:I saw one tip last week where someone bought 2L of full cream milk(Purple Top) and poured half into a a 2L and then topped up both 2Lwithwater and had a total of 4L of blue milk for the cost of a 2L of fullcream milk..
*You can also use the Blue Top – 1/4 water to 3/4 milk.
* You can also buy powdered milk – a $9 bag makes approx 10L
However – DO NOT do this if you are feeding young children or babies.

Lunch Wrap
Nonfood items Line bottom of oven with tin foil rather than more expensiveoven liners.. Keep plastic containers from yoghurt etc Use resealable sandwich bags instead of glad-wrap etc. Gladwrap is generally a 1 use product. I wash the bags out & reuse until they fall apart. My kids always bring them home in their lunch boxes. 1 box of 30 bags can often last a whole term, and they have heaps of other uses too. ones. Also Ibuy all toiletries such as toothpaste, band-aids, moisturiser, shampoo, deoderant, panadol, throat lozenges etc from supermarket rather than pharmacy & hair salons. Or use a re-useable lunch box. When I have a couple of spare hours..
I make up a couple of large dishes of macaroni cheese (uses 200gms bacon) and freeze them - easy to pull out, defrost and heat on busy nights. I've seen smaller portions sell at PnS for $5!! Muffins are easy to bake and pop in freezer for lunches or snacks. Bought muffins are a rip-off.
I make shower-gel: Grate a cake of soap into an ice-cream container, dissolve with boiling water, stir well, and pour half into another container and top with boiling water; let mixture set, then pour into liquid soap dispensers or showergel bottles. One cake soap makes 4 litres shower-gel.

Roast a whole chicken for a meal, & use the carcass to make a good healthy soup.

To make kids no more tangle spray.....I still have her old spray bottle. Put a little bit of conditioner in it& top with water. Shake & then shake before use. its great& way cheaper.

Making your own baby food is HEAPS cheaper Get an ice cube tray ( op shop if your dont have one )Boil some veges up...doesnt matter if they are seconds or whatever,mash/meuli/puree up the veges, pour into ice cube tray and pop infreezer, when frozen, put in sealable bag/container. Take out two or three cubes for baby and defrost, then heat. Healthier for baby too.

Bread: I buy pre-packaged bread mix & it's $7.00 for 4 loaves. Nice bread though. Soy, linseed, sourdough, rye etc

Heres a laundry liquid:'First make sure you have empty containers to put it in. I use empty 2litre milk containers as I make up 30 litres at a time and so use 3 x10 litre buckets to mix it up in. Dissolve 1 cup of Lux flakes and 1cup of washing soda (both available at supermarket for about $8-9) in a bucket of boiling water. Then divide the mixture in that bucket so thatall 3 buckets have equal amounts of mixture. Top each bucket up to full with cold water and pour the final mixture into your containers. Useabout one cup of mixture per full load of washing, gets the washing nice and clean. I have been using this mixture for over 2 years and itis so easy and cheap to make. Btw 30 litres of mixture will last approximately 3-4 months.....'

Floor cleaner:Just very hot water & throw in a large sprig of rosemary! no needfor air freshener either, sprig of rosemary or lavendar does the trick!

$3 worth of sausages meat:Mix with breadcrumbs and onions finely sliced and diced. brown them ina pan and add water... throw in some bits and pieces of veges...whatever is handy. thicken with flour or cornflour to make lots ofgravy and season to taste... you can even throw in some curry if you want. Boil around 1 up of rice (serves around two people) to 2 cups of water... Serve with the meatball vege stew. filling and nutritious.Serves around 4 to 5 people and costs around $1.80 each.

Juice Concentrate:To make frozen juice concentrate..here are some instructions: http://www.ehow.com/how_2122825_make-frozen-juice-concentrate.htmlNote that this is frozen CONCENTRATE (which is how you can buy juice in Europe/States). When you're ready to use it, you mix the frozen concentrate with maybe 3 parts water or so. You don't have to thaw the concentrate first, you can just stir (or shake if you have lidded container) into the water until mixed well together.

Vinegar can be used as a cleaner:for almost everything around the house. It will clean and kill germs. You dont need all those expensive cleaners. Just use an old spraybottle and put a quarter of vinegar and three quarters water as a spray cleaner. For wood floors I use hot water with vinegar. When you cleanthere is a bit of a vinegar smell but it doesnt last. For the stuff you would use Jif or something for, make up a paste with baking soda and water. Vinigar can also be used as rinse aid in the dishwasher. I dont use many proper cleaners any more and my house is just as clean and it saves LOADS of $$$$. There are lots of websites about vinegar as a cleaner just google it

Soap ideas: To turn soap scraps into soap bars, place the saved scraps in a saucepan, cover with water and allow them to soak for 24 hours, giving an occasional stir. Bring the mixture to the boil, lower the heat and stir or mash the soap until you have a thick liquid. Remove the soap mixture from the heat and add a tablespoon of vegetable oil to each resultant cupful of liquid. Pour into moulds and allow to harden for two weeks before use. If you want to use your soap after 24 hours, omit the vegetable oil from the mixture.
For a fragrant soap, add your favourite essential oil when the soap has been removed from the heat and has cooled but is still liquid. Stir the oil into the soap mixture a drop at a time until it smells sufficiently scented. To make liquid soap, place the leftover pieces of soap in a jar of hot water, then add some lemon juice and glycerine and shake well. Soap scraps can also beused for a pre-soaped bathroom wash bag, which is great for scrubbing the kids clean. Make a drawstring bag from old towelling and fill it with the leftovers. Add two tablespoons of dried herbs - chamomile or lavender are excellent - and two tablespoons of medium ground oatmeal to exfoliate and soften the skin. It will save on soap and is easy forsmall children to handle.
Fabric softener: buy a cheap hair conditioner, squirt a tiny 10 cent size dollop into your fabric softener holder, then fill up the remainder with very hot water. Voila, fluffy towels.

Gas Savers:Air up your tyres. For every two PSI that all of your tires are below the recommended level, you lose 1% on your gas mileage. Most car tyres are five to ten PSI below the normal level, so that means by just airing up your tyres, you can improve your gas mileage by up to 5%.It's easy, too. Just read your car's manual to see what the recommended tyre pressure is, then head to the service station. Ask the attendant inside if they have a tire air gauge you can borrow (most of them do),then stop over by the air pump. Check your tyres, then use the pump to fill them up to where they should be. It's basically free gas!

Petrol saving tip:Always keep your tank at about half full. Carrying around the extra weight of a full tank uses more fuel.......When filling your car dont have the flow on the fast option just put it on half and fill it slowly. Saves the gas from the nozzel filling up your tank. Also drive at 95kms instead of 100 will save you petrol as well

Make your own wedges:Just wash and cut up potatoes put in a bag with seasoning and onto abaking tray, spray with oil. Yum... Oh and.. use an oil sprayer, get heaps more use out of your oil and save on the calories.

Cereal:We buy one box of yummy cereal - think it's the sanitarium brand with almond and sugar coated cornflakes but find it's too sweet on it's own anyway and at $6 a box quite expensive. Using this cereal as the base we add half a packet of regular cornflakes, a packet of fibre bran and about a cup of regular oats making it much healthier, filling and economical. Works out to about $10 for cereal for 4 people lasting approximately two weeks.

Concrete cleaner:50/50 mix of Coca Cola(regular, full sugar variety) and milk (fullfat), applied to dirty concrete then scrubbed with a scrubbing brush should clean it up reasonably well. Rinse with a jet of plain water.

Nits!!Used neat, tea tree oil is said to kill head lice. It will be necessary to also comb it through the hair with a fine metal tooth comb. One part tea tree oil mixed with ten parts water is said to be a good repellent once they have been removed. Spray through hair, taking care to get under the hair and right down to the scalp. The oil and water won't mix so it will be necessary to regularly shake the container. Be aware that tea tree oil is quite potent stuff so, as with any pure product, a very little goes a long way. BTW tea tree oil is one of those substances which has been around for ever and is credited with all sorts of medicinal properties....I like the idea this could be a repellent!

Cheap gift idea:Bath salts 1 cup of rock salt in bowl and add 5 -6 drops of food colouring, stir well until u get desired colour. add 5-6 drops of scented oil and mix well (may want more oil) pour coloured scented rocksalt into bottle and seal tight. add ribbon to decorate bottle &label to explain contents and use e.g 4 teaspoons into warm bath.

Make your own multi-purpose cleaner
Using 1/2 teaspoon washing soda, a dab of liquid soap, and 2 cups of hot tap water. Shake until washing soda has dissolved.
