Time has come to take firm action if the United Nations does not want to be rightly accused of complicity by omission.

The Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip represent severe and massive violations of international humanitarian law as defined in the Geneva Conventions, both in regard to the obligations of an Occupying Power and in the requirements of the laws of war.

Those violations include:

Collective punishment – the entire 1.5 million people who live in the crowded Gaza Strip are being punished for the actions of a few militants.

Targeting civilians – the airstrikes were aimed at civilian areas in one of the most crowded stretches of land in the world, certainly the most densely populated area of the Middle East.

Hamas has expressed its political stances and explained its views in a series of documents published since its founding.

According to one translation^[specify], the 1988 Hamas Covenant (or Charter) states that the organization's goal is to "raise the banner of Allah over every inch of Palestine, for under the wing of Islam followers of all religions can coexist in security and safety where their lives, possessions and rights are concerned." It further asserts that "The Islamic Resistance Movement is a humanistic movement. It takes care of human rights and is guided by Islamic tolerance when dealing with the followers of other religions. It does not antagonize anyone of them except if it is antagonized by it or stands in its way to hamper its moves and waste its efforts. Under the wing of Islam, it is possible for the followers of the three religions - Islam, Christianity and Judaism - to coexist in peace and quiet with each other. Peace and quiet would not be possible except under the wing of Islam. Past and present history are the best witness to that."

The thirty-six articles of the Covenant detail the movement's Islamist beliefs regarding the primacy of Islam in all aspects of life. The Covenant identifies Hamas as the Muslim Brotherhood in Palestine and considers its members to be Muslims who "fear God and raise the banner of Jihad in the face of the oppressors." Hamas describes resisting and quelling the enemy as the individual duty of every Muslim and prescribes vigilant roles for all members of society; including men and women, professionals, scientists and students. The enemy is defined primarily in terms of antisemitic conspiracy theories of world Jewish domination.^[66]

In several places, the Charter compares Israeli treatment of Palestinians to the actions of the Nazis. For example Israel is described as "a vicious enemy which acts in a way similar to Nazism, making no differentiation between man and woman, between children and old people" and predicts that the "Zionist Nazi activities against our people will not last for long."

The Charter outlines the organization's position on various issues, including social and economic development and ideological influences, education, as well as its position regarding Israel. Amongst many other things, it reiterates the group's rejection of the principle of coexistence with Zionism, which it defines as a danger not just to Palestinians, but to all Arab states. While primarily focusing on what it calls the "Zionist invasion" of Palestine as the cause of conflict, in places the Charter asserts that Zionism was able to achieve its ends due to the activities of secret organizations such as Freemasons and cites as an example the ability of Zionists to obtain the Balfour Declaration of 1917 (or see the end of this post). The Charter asserts that through shrewd manipulation of imperial countries and secret societies, Zionists were behind a wide range of events and disasters going as far back in history as the French Revolution and that "There is no war going on anywhere, without having their finger in it." The Charter also selectively quotes Islamic religious texts to provide justification for fighting against and killing Jews.

A memorandum prepared by the group's political bureau in the 1990s at the request of western diplomats and published in a book by Azzam Tamimi stated that Hamas is "a Palestinian national liberation movement that struggles for the liberation of the Palestinian occupied territories and for the recognition of Palestinian legitimate rights." Hamas, the document stated, "regards itself as an extension of an old tradition that goes back to the early 20th century struggle against British and Zionist colonialism in Palestine." The memorandum notes that in principle Hamas does not endorse targeting civilians, but argues that attacks which did so represented "an exception necessitated by Israel's insistence on targeting Palestinian civilians and by Israel's refusal to agree to an understanding prohibiting the killing of civilians on both sides comparable to the one reached between Israel and Hezbollah in Southern Lebanon."^[67] Even in the 1990s, according to this memorandum, the organization foresaw the day when "dialogue" between itself and Israel would be possible, but warned that "The prospect of the movement initiating, or accepting dialogue with Israel is nonexistent at present because of the skewed balance of power between the Palestinians and the Israelis. In Sheikh Yassin's words: 'There can be no dialogue between a party that is strong and oppressive and another that is weak and oppressed. There can be no dialogue except after the end of oppression.'"

Global Peace and Justice Auckland and the Palestine Human Rights Campaign are planning a major mobilisation to protest the latest Israeli outrages against Palestinians living in the Gaza strip.

The protest will gather at 12 noon, Aotea Square, Auckland on Saturday 10th January.

We have received numerous calls asking what actions are planned for Aucklanders to register their outrage at Israel's actions. Saturday's mobilisation gives that opportunity.

(An organising meeting for the mobilisation and to plan immediate steps in the campaign to boycott Israel will be held at 6pm on Tuesday 6th January at the Unite Union Office at 6A Western Springs Road, Auckland)

Meanwhile like most New Zealanders we find the government's failure to condemn the Israeli massacre an outrage. The utterances of Foreign Minister Murray McCully are obsequious and embarrassing. His fawning to the US position will be welcomed in Israel but will be condemned around the rest of the world. He is putting New Zealand well out of step with the United Nations.

United Nations General Assembly President Miguel d'Escoto called the launching of the ground offensive in Gaza "a monstrosity" in an accurate reflection of international opinion. McCully on the other hand has yet to issue a single word of criticism.

Global Peace and Justice Auckland is organising a protest against Israeli's latest attacks on the people of Gaza.

The protest will be outside the US Consulate in Quay Street Auckland from 4pm this Tuesday 30th December. The consulate is being targeted because the US has given unconditional backing to the Israeli government in these attacks.

Initial reports indicate at least 200 Palestinians have been killed and close to 800 injured in what has been described as one of the worst indiscriminate killings of Palestinians in the 60 years since they were driven from their homes and their land by Jewish terror squads at the founding of Israel.

Israel says the attacks are in retaliation for rocket attacks against Israel from inside Gaza. However having besieged one and half millions Palestinians in Gaza and refused to allow land, sea or air access Israel is keeping these people in a massive open-air prison.

It is to be expected that Palestinians will fight back with whatever means they have at hand.

We are calling on the New Zealand government to condemn these cowardly Israeli attacks.

The Times of India, India's leading online news website, reports at least seven westerners are among 15 hostages being held captive at Mumbai's top luxury hotel the Taj Hotel.

Details of the hostage situation came from a hostage who managed top escape.

Kiwi David Clemmett and his wife Vinka are trapped in their hotel room in the hotel, but are not thought to be hostages.

The news website says at least 80 people are dead after a series of co-ordinated attacks by terrorist gunmen at seven sites in Mumbai, including two luxury hotels and other popular tourist locations.

At least 250 are reported injured.

A British witness has told Indian TV the attackers wanted anyone with a British or American passport.

Mr Clemmett says they heard pistols, rifles, shot guns and grenades.

He says they have locked themselves in the room, barricaded the TV unit against the doors and pulled the blind down to protect themselves from broken glass.

He says smoke filled their room from fires within the hotel and they had to rip the smoke detector off the wall.

Indian police said gunmen attacked two luxury hotels, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station in southern Mumbai and Leopold's restaurant, a Mumbai landmark.

Another luxury hotel, Oberoi Hotel, is on fire following the attacks.

The gunmen, some also armed with grenades, attacked targets including the hotels, a cafe, and a train station, police say.

The Times of India reports the head of India's anti-terrorism unit has been killed.

The news website says the terrorists hijacked a white police jeep near Metro cinema in South Mumbai.

Firing was also reported near Maharashtra state assembly building in South Mumbai.

A.N. Roy, a senior police officer, said police were battling the gunmen.

The targets include businesses frequented by international visitors.

"The terrorists have used automatic weapons and in some places grenades have been lobbed. The encounters are still going on and we are trying to overpower them," Roy said.

"It seems to be a terrorist attack, many places under siege by gunmen," A.K. Sharma, a Mumbai government railway police commissioner, told local television.

The Associated Press reported that police said gunmen had attacked the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station in southern Mumbai and Leopold's restaurant, a Mumbai landmark. A reporter at the restaurant says it is pitted with bullet holes and blood stains on the floor.

New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet issued updated travel advice for India.

Russia may have gone to war with Georgia, but in fact it only looks like its a strategic plan to capture some profits from the Caspian Sea Oil pipeline. Not to forget when the U.S invaded Afghanistan they captured and started contracts with the Saudi's for the Caspian Sea drilling contract.

Notice how during this war Oil peaked, sounds like another move for the elite to crash the global economy and set world wide Union's, much like the European Union and the starting appearance of the African Union, since Mugabe's regime in which the U.S won't hang him but did for Saddam Hussein. Lastly on the point of unions, countrys fitting but not members to the European Union will soon join it looks like and more formations of the North American Union and Pacific Union are shaping closer to there goals.

Clearly from the map for a invading force, theres no other directions apart the Gulf and Oman Sea, it appears like Iran maybe next in line for the U.S war of terror (not on on terror) and with China snatching up Trade agreements right now, they're the biggest closest thing to a super power there is, down the list of neighbouring territory would be Pakistan and India and Saudi Arabia (we all know the Saudi and Israeli connection goes deep with the U.S). Not to forget Syria and and Turkey not too far away, though with outnumbered forces Syria would go down eventually and Turkey was helping the U.S with the Iraqi and Afghanistan invasions so a large scale war in the next 4 years or less does seem quite near inevitable.

Formal recognition of Kosovo as an independent state by the EU or NATO obligates Moscow to resort to 'brute force,' Russia's envoy to NATO says.

In a video link-up from Brussels Dmitry Rogozin said, "if the European Union works out a common position, or if NATO breaches its mandate in Kosovo, these organizations will be in conflict with the United Nations," Interfax news agency reported.

"We too will have to proceed from the view that in order to be respected we must use brute force, in other words armed force."

Russia, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, has been vehemently opposing Kosovo's independence, backing Serbia, and reflecting Moscow's close ties with the leadership in Belgrade.

Rogozin also cited unconfirmed reports that NATO troops were blocking the border between Kosovo and Serbia and not allowing Serb officials into Kosovo.

"This is not what we agreed. If this information is confirmed, then here in Brussels there will be some tough talking with our partners, and there could be quite a dramatic development in relations between Russia and NATO," RIA Novosti quoted Rogozin as saying.

The Russian envoy highlighted that 'under no circumstances' should NATO get involved in politics and that "It must remain neutral.''

So far, over a dozen nations have recognized Kosovo's declaration of independence from Serbia, including the United States, Britain, France and Germany, while Russia, China, Spain and others, have rejected the unilateral declaration.
