About The Direct Democracy Party NZ
The Direct Democracy Party of New Zealand is a New Zealand political party which promotes greater participation by the people in the decision making of government. The party's leader is Kelvyn Alp.
It is one of the few parties in New Zealand that openly challenges the current monetary system and actively promotes solutions to address matters of irredeemable debt. It aims to establish a system of binding referendums similar to that used by Switzerland for all major decisions usually made by politicians according to their own vested interests and advocates for a New Zealand Constitution to protect and enshrine the rights and freedoms of the people.
In 2005 the Direct Democracy Party gained official registration as a political party, and contested the 2005 elections as a dry run to establish the protocols for the electioneering and administration procedures in preparation for the upcoming elections in 2008. Although they fielded a 32 member party list, and obtained only 717 votes, (or 0.04% of the total vote) failing to get any MPs into parliament, this was to be expected with a less than obliging mainstream media and no campaigning.
